From printed pamphlets to WhatsApp message; rumor movement achieves a milestone
The danger of misusing technologies is not unknown but as we are growing the morality is decreasing at a level where we can’t even compare ourselves with animals. At least they don’t lynch by believing the false news that we are doing in the name of caste, religion and many more and as if this was not enough we started it for the sake of a WhatsApp message. The rumor message that causes death is not less than a riot and finally, the Supreme Court takes this matters on its hand, and order to the government to start working to stop this.
In the last 18 months, total 74 mob attacks have happened due to rumors that caused 34 death includes the death of Mohammed Azam on 13th July 2018. These rumors include WhatsApp, social media and locally. Even though the repeated attempt and social awareness, people are still believing a simple message without any verification.
Technologies never help but encourage more
Though we thought technology will erase the blind faith and help people to analyze before believing something but the outcomes are opposite. In fact, they become more educated illiterate than before the time when people used to distribute the religious pamphlets. Before a decade, mobile phones became popular, and we thought good things are coming in the future and people should understand the importance of technologies. People became advanced but at spreading rumors through SMS. Just like those old days where people were distributing printed papers and forced others to continue in through a warning message that something horrible will happen if they ignore. I want to meet those rich people who had enough money to print and distribute craps but don’t have a single rupee to offer a beggar on the street. Thanks to the technology that saves their money and now they are spreading their rumor movements through mobile phones. As if this was not enough, smartphones, social media, and WhatsApp came into our lives, and people don’t miss these golden opportunities to spread their movements.
Here are some messages about the Golden era of rumors
– Please stop drinking Coca-Cola. An HIV patient faced an accident while working at the Coca-Cola factory, and some of his blood drops fell on the prepared liquid. The company didn’t take any action and supplied it to the market. It is still unclear where it is. So to avoid HIV, please don’t buy Coca-Cola.
– Don’t receive a call while you are traveling alone at night. People are dying after receiving it. This incident took 35 lives. Please forward this message as possible as.
– I love my Mom. Forward this to twenty people including me. Otherwise, something wrong will happen before Saturday. Forward this if you care for your mom.
If we write about such messages, it will be bigger than 18 Mahabharata combine and not to mention that how politicians are taking advantages of it that are causing riots due to these forward messages.
An understanding of Human Psychology
The problem is not with the technologies, and we must not blame it for the wrongdoing of the human being. The problem is related to the psychology that leads us to fall for such traps and sometimes force people to do the weird thing and even encourage to lynch. Humans are intelligent but fail to understand why it happens, and they do something crap whenever feel something wrong will happen. This unusual behavior is more if they are going through a tough phase. Rumor is nothing but an advanced version of such an abnormal way of acting.
The first thing is to remember that rumors are all about information, not opinion and people have interest more in data than the viewpoint. These are the people no different than the conspiracy theorists like the Flat Earth Society, Australia doesn’t exist (seriously), and the list goes on. These people spread fake news based on the events that are happening or with some data that is related to it indirectly.
For example, Child trafficking is a serious issue, and often they lured children by giving them chocolates or some kind of products that kids like the most. It’s happening from the ancient time and sadly will continue unless there is some heinous punishment equivalent to death and life imprisonment. Just like during our childhood, parents and grannies were used to tell us that if we don’t study or obey them, child traffickers will kidnap and the latest rumors are coming like this. There are multiple reasons why rumors spread like fire and why some people are doing this.
They feel important & informative
As they think the message will help people or save them from problems by analyzing from their point of views, they forward it others. It continues like this, and people ignore to verify even after feeling the importance.
To improve their image and status
These are the people who are obsessed with their reputation and can do everything to improve it. They want to get personal attention from others and by spreading a rumor makes them feel like a well-informed person, and they think people will ask about it.
It is important to remember that whatever we see, read or hear, not everything is true, and we should not act on it. In the 21st century, there are multiple ways to verify the information and if something looks suspicious better to cross check. Even if they suspect someone, they have no rights to take the laws in their hand and as far as a responsible citizenship concern, better to inform the police. Rumors never do good, and in fact, it has been proved deadly now a day.
