Hima Das, Suni Chhetri, and many more proved Cricket is not the only game
An 18 years girl from rice field to reaching the global event and becoming the first gold medalist of the nation in her first ever international event but we people are not satisfied and had a little bit objection. That’s what Athletics Federation of India said but later apologized however refused to delete the video. Of course, they should not because that made us feel proud. When a girl from a small village with no background made us proud due to her performance and gave the interview at an international how can we delete that just for a silly reason? And again she proved that cricket is the not the only game in India.
A girl who won the first ever gold medal for India does not have a roller coaster ride to reach here, and like many underprivileged families, she is facing the same struggle on a daily basis. After the win, she joined in a club of athletes who made the nation proud and at the same time creating another history by making her name as the first runner. Whether it is a God gifted talent or her own hard work, her performance is beyond imagination as the coach aim was to make a place for Asian relay team. But she did something big that no one ever imagined. Even though her parents were reluctant to send her for training but thanks to the coach who was not in a mood to hear their rejection, and proved that he was right. But she is not the only sports personality that forced to think about other game beyond cricket. Here we are presenting a list who made the nation proud without any external support. We are not making any ranking here as they are great in their respective games.
Well, she is not the only sports personality who made it big in a cricket-loving nation where people have to search on the internet to know the name of Indian Hockey team captain. A silent battle against the popularity of cricket already started before two decades when 16 years unknow girl Sania Mirza won the 2003 Wimbledon Championships Girls’ Doubles title with Alisa Kleybanova. Not to forget about her achievements of reaching semi-finals in 2003 US Open Girls’ Doubles and quarterfinals of the 2002 US Open Girls’ Doubles. Back to back, her stellar performance made an overnight sensation that she surely deserved and a time came when she achieved No. 1 ranking in the tennis world! Did we need to say more?
Probably, 2008 was a period when India got to know more about two sports personality even though they are in the field from a significant time. At 15 he is probably the youngest player from India to represent at an international platform. Though he continued his best performances by winning in the various international event but just before a year of Beijing Olympic 2008 he suffered through a back injury. His condition became so worst that he even unable to lift the rifle, but due to his determination he won the first-ever gold in shooting for India. There is a controversy regarding the final where he alleged that during the break someone tampered with his gunsight. No one knows what happened, but all we know that he made the nation proud.
At the same time, an 18 years girl fighting hard against world’s 5th and 4th and reached the quarterfinals as the first Indian woman by defeating them, however, lost from the rank 16 Maria Kristin Yulianti. Even she lost but won the hearts of Indian, and we got to know more about her. The achievements did not start here, she already made a mark on Indian Badminton before by winning the World Junior Badminton Championships and became the first Indian to win it. From then she never looked back and became a prominent face in badminton and even became the No1. It’s a pure coincidence that both Sania and Saina got No 1 in April 2015.
We would never know anything about wrestling after Dara Singh had this player gave up due to poverty. But he did not, and today we hear, read and watch wrestling and know many players’ name. Some credit goes to him also. Perhaps he is the one who suffered a lot not due to poverty but for the choosing this game. HIs brother quit wrestling as their family unable to support two at the same time. As a wrestler, he has to take care of the nutrition, but it is difficult for a family where there was no guarantee about the food at the end of the of the month. Coming from such background, he defeats all the odd and won 2010 World Wrestling Championships held at Moscow. Even he got an offer of crore of rupees from a fixer to lose the match, he refused and made the nation proud by winning the gold. The fixer even tried to lure them by saying that he already reached the final so no need to worry about a medal. His achievements don’t end here, and he won silver in Olympic too. Even though injury and some other controversies he never gives up and wins gold for a continuous three times in Commonwealth game.
He is the most talented but yet unfortunate player who still not become the part of any major international events despite getting the 2nd rank by suppressing Leone Messi. If this is not unfortunate, then I don’t know what it is. His bad luck didn’t end here, and in fact, he already signed the contract with Queens Park Rangers in 2009 but denied work permit by the British government because of India’s ranking was below 70. But he never shows the negative attitude that made him one of the finest footballer of India till now after Bhaichung Bhutia. Son of an officer of the Indian Army, once he also wanted to become the cricketer but the expensive game forced to change his mind and we could not agree more with his decision. Even though his stellar performance we hardly knew anything about football, and it’s a different story that India was once Asia’s number one football team. But thanks to his appeal to watch the game, people came to the stadium. Hima Das, Suni Chhetri, and many more proved Cricket is not the only game.
